President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for successfully advancing to the final round of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, in recognition of their outstanding accomplishment in reaching the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament for the fifth consecutive time. This milestone was achieved following a hard-fought and impressive victory over their long-standing rivals, Senegal.

In his commendation, President Tinubu praised the unwavering resilience, skill, and dominance demonstrated by the reigning champions, highlighting that this latest win marked the seventh time Nigeria has triumphed over Senegal in the competition’s history. The thrilling 75-68 victory took place at the prestigious Palais De la Sport in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, in what many dubbed “the final before the final” due to the intensity and high stakes of the matchup.

The President also celebrated the team’s success in securing a place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments, set to take place in March 2026, emphasizing the importance of this achievement for Nigerian basketball on the global stage.

President Tinubu Comments on D’Tigress’ Performance

“I have closely observed the discipline, determination, focus, and remarkable team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament. These qualities have not only brought great honor to our nation but also earned well-deserved respect for our players and coaching staff across the world,” President Tinubu said.

He gave special recognition to Rena Wakama, the team’s pioneering first female Head Coach, praising her leadership and invaluable experience both as a former player and now as a coach. According to the President, her guidance continues to inspire D’Tigress to reach new levels of excellence in this highly competitive sport.

President Tinubu assured the team of his unwavering support as they prepare to compete for their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall championship, expressing confidence in their ability to bring more glory to Nigeria.
