Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is reportedly set to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the first week of January. Sources cited by Daily Nigerian said consultations around the move have intensified in recent days.
The reported decision signals a major political shift in Kano State, where Yusuf currently holds strong influence within the NNPP. Reports indicate that 25 out of 27 NNPP lawmakers in the Kano State House of Assembly support him.
Kwankwaso opposes Abba Yusuf defection
Former Kano State governor and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has openly rejected Yusuf’s alleged plan to join the APC. Political observers say the disagreement reflects growing internal tension within the party.
Sources said relations between Yusuf and Kwankwaso have deteriorated in recent months, with both leaders pursuing different political strategies. The division has raised concerns about the NNPP’s unity in Kano State.
Reported plans to realign Kano government
Sources also claimed that Yusuf may restructure his administration to align more closely with the APC if the defection occurs. One reported plan involves initiating the impeachment of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam.
The move could pave the way for Murtala Sule-Garo, the APC’s former deputy governorship candidate, to assume the deputy governorship role. However, the Kano State Government has not confirmed these reports.
Analysts weigh political impact
Political analysts believe an Abba Yusuf defection could weaken the NNPP’s grip on Kano State and reshape the political landscape. They also say the move could strengthen the APC ahead of future elections.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Yusuf has not issued an official statement on the matter. The APC has also remained silent on the reported defection.
