Mamady Doumbouya won the presidency in the election held in Guinea. This constitutes a great change for the country, considering the coup that occurred only four years ago. It was reported that the opposition’s boycott contributed to the controversy surrounding the process.
Background of the Coup
Doumbouya staged a military coup in September 2021. Soldiers arrested President Alpha Conde during protests over his third presidential term. Doumbouya pledged to revert to a civilian led government quickly and also pledged not to run for political office.
He however, later changed his position. He dissolved the government and suspended the constitution. The move generated international condemnation, though it strengthened his position.
The Path to Elections
The military junta established a transition timetable while under regional group pressures. ECOWAS insisted on holding elections by 2025. Doumbouya overhauled the electoral structure and developed a novel constitution.
However the opposition leaders encountered arrests and limitations. People chose to boycott the voting due to unfair circumstances. Voters headed to the polling stations on 27th Dec. 2025 amidst tight security.
Election Results Announced
Election results were announced by the election commission on the 30th of December 2025. Doumbouya won the election with 86.72 percent of the vote.
Moreover the turnout was around 78 percent, according to officials. His biggest challenger, Cellou Dalein Diallo, did not run because of the boycott. Preliminary counts verified his landslide win.
Reactions From Home And Abroad
Fans celebrated in the streets of Conakry. They appreciated Doumbouya for his stability and infrastructure development. Critics, though, dubbed the election a farce.
Internationally, the African Union raised questions about inclusivity. The United States called on the respect of democratic standards. France, a former colonial power in the region, kept a close watch.
Challenges Ahead for Doumbouya
As president, Doumbouya has challenges related to the economy. This is because Guinea has large mineral deposits. At the same time, it has poverty.
Additionally, there is a need to reconcile with the opposition. This is because there might be unrest if the grievances are not addressed. Doumbouya emphasized unity during his victory speech.
This means that his tenure is set to begin under the microscope. To succeed, the president is expected to promote change and facilitate a dialogue process. The fate of Guinea lies in this process.
In conclusion, the end to the reign of the junta may mean the dawn of democracy for the country, though the presence of Doumbouya raises some questions regarding this.
