The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government over rising petrol prices, saying the increase is worsening pressure on Nigerian households and businesses.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said petrol was selling for as much as ₦1,470 per litre in some locations. Recent reports have also documented sharp increases in petrol pump prices following higher refinery prices.
Abdullahi said the rising cost of petrol was affecting transportation, food, electricity, education and other basic expenses. The opposition party also cited reports of private schools increasing fees by between 30 and 40 per cent. It argued that household incomes had not increased at a similar rate.
According to the ADC, families were facing difficult choices as the cost of essential goods and services continued to rise. The party claimed that some households were skipping meals, withdrawing children from school and delaying medical treatment.
The party also criticised the government over what it described as excessive spending by public officials. It argued that ordinary Nigerians should not be expected to bear increasing economic pressure while public resources were being used for what it called extravagant lifestyles.

The ADC further criticised the government’s economic reforms. It argued that reforms should improve living standards rather than increase pressure on households and businesses.
On the 2027 presidential election, the party said it would offer an alternative economic programme under its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The party urged the Federal Government to respond to the rising cost of living and warned against interpreting Nigerians’ resilience as acceptance of current conditions.
