Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland party has won a decisive victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, securing 43.8 percent of the vote in state elections on Sunday.
Preliminary results show the AfD falling short of an outright majority, heading for approximately 39 seats in the 83-seat state parliament. However, 42 is what is needed for an absolute majority. Despite that shortfall, state leader Ulrich Siegmund declared the result “sensational” and said the party wanted to begin governing as soon as possible.
“This isn’t just about Saxony-Anhalt,” he told supporters.
“It’s a signal for the whole of Germany.”
The conservative CDU collapsed to 17.2 per cent, losing more than half of its previous vote share. CDU leader in the state Sven Schulze, conceded defeat and said his party would have to “deal with the result.” Turnout was notably high at 77.8 per cent, suggesting strong public engagement.
The political consequences are complicated by the fact that every other major party in Germany operates a Brandmauer refusing to enter coalition with the AfD. A situation that leaves Siegmund needing to find another path to power. The left-wing populist BSW party has left the door open to cooperation with the AfD on some issues. BSW shares the AfD’s tough stance on migration and supports importing Russian gas, giving Siegmund a potential avenue to government.
If no coalition is possible, Siegmund suggested he would welcome fresh elections. “Then we’d just get 50 or 55 per cent,” he said.
