A court has heard that the driver of a Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua was attempting to overtake a moving truck when the vehicle crashed in Nigeria.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode is facing charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national driver’s licence. However, he denies the allegations.
The court heard that Joshua and members of his team were travelling to visit his father in Ogun State, near Lagos, in December 2025 when the crash occurred. According to evidence presented at the trial, the passengers were asleep when Kayode attempted to overtake a moving truck. He subsequently lost control of the Lexus, which collided with a stationary lorry.
Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, died in the crash.
The former heavyweight champion was a passenger in the vehicle and survived the collision.
A second defendant, Abubakar Adamu, 35, was the driver of the stationary lorry. He denies a charge of obstructing the free flow of traffic.
Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division told the court that the damaged Lexus and stationary lorry had already been removed by the time officers arrived. However, investigators found debris from the collision and soya beans scattered across the road from the lorry’s load.
Ajayi said the only items recovered from the Lexus were a logbook, painkillers and an energy drink. All of which were found near the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Joshua yet to give statement
The court also heard that police have yet to obtain a statement from Joshua regarding the crash. During cross-examination, Kayode’s lawyer questioned Ajayi about why the boxer had not yet provided a statement.
The inspector said “efforts are ongoing” and explained that he had not contacted Joshua because he did not have his telephone number. The trial, however, was adjourned until September 10.
Joshua was born in Watford but has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, close to the crash site.
“I didn’t even realise how special they are,” he wrote.”I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men.”100% it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents.” Joshua said in his social media tribute after the crash.
