Former UFC light-heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith has been arrested in Nebraska on three felony charges.
The 38-year-old American was booked into the Sarpy County Jail on charges of terroristic threats, false imprisonment, and first-degree domestic violence assault.
According to information obtained by BBC Sport, Smith remains in custody and is expected to appear before a judge no later than Friday.
The arrest comes just months after Smith announced his retirement from the UFC. His final appearance in the promotion came in April, when he suffered a defeat to Zhang Mingyang. Later that same month, he competed in Gamebred Bareknuckle.
Smith challenged Jon Jones for the UFC light-heavyweight championship in 2019 but was defeated by unanimous decision.
He made his UFC debut in 2016 and went on to fight 24 times for the organisation, establishing himself as one of the division’s most experienced competitors.
Across his professional mixed martial arts career, Smith compiled a record of 39 victories and 22 defeats.
Since stepping away from active UFC competition, Smith has worked as a fight analyst and commentator on UFC broadcasts.
No further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences have been released. The legal process remains ongoing, and the charges against Smith have yet to be tested in court.
