The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) linking it to the reported attack on Peter Obi and Chief John Odigie-Oyegun in Edo state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Felix Morka, national publicity secretary of the APC, described the ADC as “insufferable jesters.”
He accused the party of trying to smear the ruling party over what he called a self-inflicted crisis.
Morka said the APC had no role in the incident. He described the allegation as a “reckless attempt” to blame the ruling party before investigations are concluded.
‘ADC Its Own Nemesis’
According to him, the ADC has become “its own nemesis” and needs no external help to undermine itself.
“The ADC is doing a good job crippling itself even before it has time to stand on its feet,” he said.
He faulted the party for accusing the APC of orchestrating the shooting before law enforcement agencies could complete preliminary investigations.
Morka said the move shows disregard for due process. He added that it portrays the ADC as “accuser, investigator, prosecutor and judge in its own cause.”
The APC spokesperson also described the ADC’s reference to “acts of terrorism by the ruling APC” as unjustifiable and insensitive.
He said the claim ignores the sacrifices of security forces battling terrorism and banditry.
Calls for Probe
While condemning violence in the political space, the APC urged the police and other security agencies to carry out a thorough and swift investigation.
“Violence of any kind in our political space is unacceptable and must be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians,” Morka said.
However, he urged investigators to scrutinise the ADC, its leaders and members. He cited alleged internal leadership struggles and factional clashes within the party.
The APC said it has no reason to interfere in what it described as a “fringe and inconsequential” meeting in Edo state.
Morka added that the ruling party remains focused on consolidating its recent victories in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and constituency elections in Rivers and Kano states.
He thanked Nigerians for their continued support of the APC and President Bola Tinubu. He said the party remains committed to building a stronger and more prosperous country.
