The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has concluded its national convention in Abuja, ratifying former Senate President David Mark as national chairman and expelling several members, including its former national deputy chairman, Nafiu Bala, over alleged anti-party activities.
The convention, held on Tuesday, also saw the expulsion of Leke Abejide and other members identified as Elias Adiukeu, Kenneth Ehiator, Kingsley Temitope, Obinna Norman, Kennedy Odiong and Stella Chukwuma.
Announcing the outcome of the convention, Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo state and chairman of the electoral sub-committee, said 1,576 delegates were accredited, while 11 votes were declared void.
He said 1,471 delegates voted in support of amendments to the party’s constitution, representing 94 per cent approval.
“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result announced, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention,” Ihedioha said.
Earlier, Olumide Akpata, chairman of the legal and convention processes committee, supervised the ratification of resolutions from the party’s 97th, 98th and 99th national executive committee (NEC) meetings.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe moved the motion for the adoption of the resolutions, while Senator Ireti Kingibe seconded the motion for the adoption of the 100th NEC meeting held on March 25, 2026.
The resolutions adopted included a waiver of membership requirements, suspension of zoning provisions for executive offices, and suspension of rules requiring replacement of vacant offices from the same zone as predecessors.
Chinedu Idigo, the party’s national organising secretary, said the decisions were aimed at restructuring internal operations ahead of future political activities.
In his closing remarks, Mark described the convention as one of the most significant he had attended, expressing optimism about the party’s future.
“Today marks the beginning of our journey to the villa and all of you are part of this history,” he said.
