The Allied Peoples Movement has called on United States authorities to release the findings of an FBI investigation allegedly linked to President Bola Tinubu.
The party wants the report released before the 2027 presidential election. However, it said authorities could withhold sensitive details that might expose witnesses, investigators or investigative methods. The APM made the demand in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Abubakar.
APM raises concern over FBI report
According to the party, continued efforts to withhold the report have raised questions about the matter.
The APM claimed that the Tinubu administration’s opposition to the release of the records had increased public suspicion. It also described the alleged attempts to withhold the report as a possible effort to hide information from Nigerians.
The party urged US authorities to release any part of the report they can disclose without affecting ongoing investigations or exposing protected individuals.
Party links report to Nigeria’s reputation
The APM said withholding the information could damage Nigeria’s reputation internationally. It also argued that transparency matters because Tinubu plans to seek another term in the 2027 presidential election.
The party urged the United States to promote transparency in cases involving drug trafficking and corruption. It said the allegations involving the Nigerian President had turned the matter into an issue of international interest.
According to the APM, releasing relevant information would help Nigerians make informed decisions during the 2027 election.
APM refers to 1993 forfeiture case
The party also referred to a 1993 US forfeiture case involving $460,000 linked to accounts associated with Tinubu.
The APM said US authorities pursued the forfeiture after investigating alleged drug-related financial transactions. It argued that the history of the case makes the release of additional records important.
The party further claimed that the forfeiture had constitutional implications for Tinubu’s eligibility to contest elections in Nigeria.
However, that position reflects the APM’s interpretation of Section 137 of the Nigerian Constitution. The report does not establish that the courts have applied the provision to disqualify Tinubu from the 2027 election.
Party asks US to assist Nigerian voters
The APM said the United States should help Nigerians access relevant information before the 2027 presidential election.
The party argued that voters should have access to records concerning candidates seeking the country’s highest office. It therefore urged US authorities to release information they can legally disclose while protecting sensitive details.
The APM said greater transparency would help Nigerians make informed choices. It also said such openness would strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.
