Apple could be preparing a major rethink of its smartwatch lineup. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the company is exploring new Apple Watch designs and form factors.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman reports that Apple’s industrial design team has spent the past year exploring a “broader rethink” of the Apple Watch. The plans could introduce fresh case styles, sizes, colours and bands. However, Apple has not confirmed these reports.
Exploring Screen-Free Fitness Tracker
One of the more interesting ideas is a screen-free fitness tracker. The device could compete with screenless wearables such as Whoop and Google’s Fitbit Air. Without a display, the tracker could be lighter and simpler for workouts and everyday fitness.
Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly testing different display types and screen sizes. A round Apple Watch has also been explored. Still, Gurman says that version is unlikely to reach the market. Apple may also expand its lineup with cheaper models beyond the existing Apple Watch SE.
Ceramic Apple Watch Could Return
Another notable possibility is the return of a ceramic Apple Watch case. According to Gurman, Apple could bring the material back later this year or in 2027. Ceramic previously appeared on selected Apple Watch models before Apple moved away from it.
Beyond the cases, Apple is reportedly planning more colours and new bands. The company is also expected to add health and fitness features across future models. These changes could give customers more choices at different price points.
What About Apple Watch Series 12?
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are expected to arrive later this year. They could launch alongside Apple’s next-generation iPhones.
However, the biggest changes may come later as Apple develops its wider smartwatch strategy. For now, the reported redesign remains under consideration.
If Apple moves ahead, its smartwatch lineup could look very different in the coming years. A screen-free tracker, fresh designs and more affordable options could also attract new users.
