Argentina Break England Hearts to Reach FIFA World Cup Final

England’s hopes of reaching a first men’s World Cup final since 1966 ended after a dramatic late comeback by Argentina.

England suffered a painful 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-final after conceding two late goals in Atlanta. Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead in the 55th minute when he finished Morgan Rogers‘ cross at the far post.

Argentina fought back in the closing stages. Enzo Fernandez equalised with a powerful long-range strike in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martinez then headed home Lionel Messi’s cross deep into stoppage time to complete the comeback and send the defending champions into the final.

Jordan Pickford produced several important saves during the match. Alexis Mac Allister also struck the woodwork twice as Argentina piled on the pressure. England’s defensive approach in the final minutes failed to hold off the late surge.

Argentina will now face Spain in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday as they aim to retain their title. England will play France in the third-place play-off after another heartbreaking exit from the tournament.
