Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a comeback victory over Leeds United, recovering from a second-half setback to strengthen their title defence.
The Gunners had started their campaign with four consecutive victories, conceding just once, before suffering a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton ahead of the international break. However, their return to league action initially proved difficult, with Leeds displaying defensive discipline and attacking ambition at the Emirates Stadium.
The visitors took the lead 10 minutes into the second half when James Justin finished from Gabriel Gudmundsson’s pull-back, sending the travelling supporters into celebration. The goal raised hopes of a memorable away result for Leeds, who had not won a league match at Arsenal since May 2003.
Arsenal struggled to establish their rhythm but responded quickly to level the contest. Riccardo Calafiori converted from close range after Ben White created the opportunity. Manager Mikel Arteta then introduced three substitutes in an immediate attempt to change the game’s direction. The changes helped transform the atmosphere inside the Emirates, where supporters had grown increasingly restless.
Bruno Guimaraes, one of Arsenal’s major summer arrivals, made an immediate impact by scoring the decisive goal eight minutes after Calafiori’s equaliser. The midfielder finished confidently from the edge of the penalty area after a flowing attacking move, completing Arsenal’s comeback and securing three important points.
The victory offered Arteta’s side a timely response after their defeat to Brighton and restored momentum to their campaign. Arsenal also reduced the gap to Premier League leaders Manchester City, who remained top on goal difference ahead of their trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday.
The result gives the defending champions renewed confidence as they seek to maintain pressure at the top of the table.
