Arsenal scored three times in seven second-half minutes to beat Lille at the Emirates Stadium and maintain their perfect start to the UEFA Champions League league phase.
Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 64th minute, lifting a clever finish over goalkeeper Berke Ozer after receiving a pass from Noni Madueke. Eberechi Eze doubled the advantage three minutes later, converting Bukayo Saka’s cross with a first-time finish. Saka then completed the scoring in the 71st minute, calmly rolling the ball into the net after another incisive attacking move.
The victory followed Arsenal’s earlier win over Napoli, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a second consecutive success in the competition. Arteta had made five changes to the team that defeated Leeds United 2-1 in the Premier League at the weekend. However, the attacking combination of Eze, Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres struggled to create clear-cut opportunities during a largely uneventful first half.
Despite the lacklustre opening, the Arsenal manager resisted making sweeping changes at the interval. His patience paid off when Timber broke the deadlock with a composed finish midway through the second half. The introduction of Saka, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Odegaard subsequently gave Arsenal greater attacking impetus. All three substitutes contributed to the improved performance, with Saka directly involved in the second goal before finding the net himself.
The three-goal burst effectively settled the contest and secured a convincing result for the north London side. Arsenal reached the Champions League final last season but lost to Paris Saint-Germain. They had previously won all eight of their league-phase matches before their campaign ended in defeat in the final.
Their latest performance suggests Arteta’s team remain capable of producing another strong run in the competition, particularly if they can maintain their second-half attacking intensity throughout the campaign.
