The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The strike began on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after a 14-day ultimatum to the university management and the Edo State Government expired. The union is demanding full implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement. It is also seeking payment of allowances owed to its members since January 2026.
Strike disrupts academic activities
The strike covers teaching and lectures across the university. It also affects examinations, research supervision and other academic duties. Earlier, the AAU chapter joined other ASUU branches authorised by the National Executive Council to prepare for industrial action.
However, the university management and the Edo State Government failed to address the union’s demands within the given period. As a result, the Ekpoma chapter began the indefinite strike after the ultimatum expired.
ASUU demands agreement implementation
The union’s demands focus on the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and unpaid allowances. ASUU has continued to demand better welfare and working conditions for academic staff in public universities. At AAU Ekpoma, the union said the unresolved issues left it with no option but to withdraw its services.
The strike will continue until the union, university management and Edo State Government resolve the outstanding issues.
