Watford forward Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring with a superb first-half strike before Connor Metcalfe sealed the win after capitalising on a defensive mistake.
At 20 years and 125 days old, Irankunda became the youngest Australian player ever to score at a World Cup, breaking the previous record held by Brett Holman, who scored for the Socceroos in 2010.
Turkey, playing in their first World Cup since 2002, controlled large periods of the match but failed to convert their chances. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach impressed on his competitive international debut, producing several key saves to preserve Australia’s lead.
The victory puts Australia in a strong position in Group D ahead of a crucial clash with hosts the United States, while Turkey will look to bounce back against Paraguay in their next match.
