Bello Haliru quits PDP after more than four decades as a major political figure in Nigeria. His decision came in a letter dated November 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Ward 1 in Birnin Kebbi. Copies of the letter also went to the state chairman, the national chairman, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
After reflecting deeply, the former minister said he felt fulfilled. Turning 80 made him realise it was time to take a well-earned rest. He added that younger leaders should now shape the direction of the country. According to him, serving Nigeria for many years remained a rare privilege.
Haliru Reflects on His Years of Service
During his long career, Mohammed held key roles in public administration. He served as Minister of Communications from 1999 to 2001 and later became Minister of Defence in 2011. His leadership also extended to the PDP, where he acted as National Chairman and later chaired the Board of Trustees.
Throughout these years, he said he always worked for unity and democratic growth. He noted that he witnessed Nigeria’s trials and triumphs and remained grateful for the chance to support national development.
Impact of His Exit on the PDP
Bello Haliru quits PDP at a time the party seeks to rebuild ahead of the 2027 elections. His influence in Kebbi State has shaped strategy, mobilisation and internal structure for decades. Many party members believe his departure will create a major shift in local political alignments.
