INEC must clarify how its chair’s email, phone number got linked to partisan X account, says Onigbinde

Oluseun Onigbinde, co-founder of BudgIT, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain how its chairman’s official email address and phone number were allegedly linked to a partisan X account.

Onigbinde made the demand in a post on X on Sunday, insisting that the electoral body must provide clear and verifiable answers to the controversy.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission still hasn’t answered a basic question: how were its chair’s email and phone linked to an account they now deny?” he wrote.

He stressed that public trust in the electoral process is critical and must not be undermined by ambiguity.

“Public trust is non-negotiable. Nigerians deserve clear evidence — not vague statements. Strengthen accountability or step aside. Democracy depends on it,” he added.

Onigbinde’s call follows the latest development on the controversy surrounding an X account with the name, Joash Amupitan, which had endorsed APC tweets during the 2023 general elections.

INEC has denied the allegation, stating that its chairman does not own or operate any X account.

Further investigation with Grok, an AI tool on X, linked the account to the chairman’s email address and phone number as contained in his official letterhead and curriculum vitae.

The controversy has also drawn reactions from the African Democratic Congress, which has called for the immediate resignation of the INEC chairman over the matter and related concerns.
