At least nine people are feared dead following an attack in Ankpali Edikwu ward, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, according to local reports.

Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable, but did not confirm an official casualty figure. The attack adds to growing concerns about insecurity in parts of the state.

The Benue State Police Command said it has intensified security operations across vulnerable areas. Authorities confirmed the deployment of tactical teams and ongoing clearance operations aimed at dislodging criminal elements. The police added that recent efforts have led to the recovery of arms and disruption of criminal activities.

Officials also warned against the spread of unverified information, urging residents to rely on credible sources. The command noted that misinformation could undermine ongoing security operations.In addition, the police issued a strong warning against cattle rustling, linking it to cycles of violence and reprisal attacks in affected communities. Those found participating in or benefiting from such activities will be treated as collaborators in criminal acts.

Benue has faced recurring security challenges, often tied to clashes involving armed groups and local communities.

The latest attack highlights the urgent need for sustained security efforts to protect lives and restore stability in the region.
