British singer and rapper Kwn has cleared the air about her roots. The singer revealed that she is half-Nigerian, despite many people thinking she is Jamaican.
Kwn, whose real name is Khyra Wilson, shared the revelation on the Culture podcast. She said Jamaican and Caribbean culture influenced her while growing up. That influence often makes people assume she comes from the Caribbean. However, Kwn said her father is Nigerian and her mother is Irish.
“I am half-Nigerian. Everyone thinks I am Jamaican but I am not,” she said.
The ‘Worst Behaviour’ hitmaker also spoke about people’s reactions to her Nigerian identity. She said many people struggle to believe she is Nigerian.
“People find it difficult if I tell them I am Nigerian,” she explained.
She added that almost nobody guessed her Nigerian roots until recently.
“Nobody has ever guessed that I am Nigerian until recently when someone guessed it. Everyone thinks I am Caribbean.”
Although Kwn has Nigerian roots, she has never visited the country. Still, the singer believes Nigerians will welcome her with open arms.
“But I have never been to Nigeria before. I know they are going to love me when I go over there,” she said.
Her comments have now put fresh attention on her Nigerian heritage. A future visit could also give her a chance to connect with a culture she has yet to experience firsthand.
