Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as head coach of Ghana’s men’s national team, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
The 73-year-old Portuguese coach will return to lead the Black Stars after briefly appearing to announce his departure following their World Cup exit.
Queiroz took charge of Ghana in April and guided the team to the last 32 at this year’s FIFA World Cup. Ghana’s campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat by Colombia. Shortly after the loss, Queiroz appeared to confirm his departure in a social media post.
However, the GFA has decided to re-engage the experienced coach following internal discussions. The football body has not disclosed the length of Queiroz’s new contract. It said he would prepare the Black Stars for “a successful new phase on the international stage”.
“The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter,” the association said in a statement.
Queiroz has a long record of working with national teams and at major international tournaments. He has previously managed Iran, Portugal and Egypt, while also having spells in charge of South Africa, Colombia and Qatar.
The Portuguese coach also spent two spells as an assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The GFA said further details about Queiroz’s mandate would be announced in due course. His second spell with Ghana will begin with the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which are scheduled to start later this month.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia. The dates and venues for Ghana’s first two qualifying fixtures have yet to be announced.
Queiroz will therefore face an immediate task of preparing the team for the AFCON qualifying campaign.
