China fireworks factory explosion kills 26 in Hunan

Deadly blast in Liuyang forces mass evacuation as authorities launch investigation.

A deadly explosion at a fireworks factory in Liuyang has killed 26 people and injured 61 others, according to Chinese state media. The blast occurred Monday afternoon at the Huasheng Fireworks plant, prompting authorities to evacuate residents within a 3km radius as emergency teams rushed to the scene.

More than 1,500 responders, supported by drones, rescue dogs and robots, were deployed. Seven people were pulled alive from the debris. Officials said two gunpowder warehouses posed a serious risk during rescue operations, leading to safety measures such as humidifying the area to prevent further explosions.

The impact damaged nearby homes, shattering windows and deforming doors. Victims, aged between their 20s and 60s, suffered injuries ranging from fractures to trauma caused by flying debris.

Chinese authorities have launched an investigation, with police taking action against company officials. President Xi Jinping has ordered a full probe and called for accountability, while urging swift medical care for the injured.

Liuyang is known as the world’s largest fireworks production hub, where similar incidents have occurred. Earlier this year, a blast in Hubei killed 12 people.

Authorities say environmental checks show normal air and water quality as recovery efforts conclude.
