Chuba Akpom Joins Ipswich on Loan Deal from Ajax

Ipswich have confirmed the acquisition of Chuba Akpom after a turbulent transfer saga involving four clubs. Both Birmingham, Middlesbrough, and Olympiakos expressed interest in the Ajax striker, but the past week has been marked by several sudden reversals and cancelled medicals before Ipswich ultimately secured his signing.

Ipswich Town have secured the services of striker Chuba Akpom on a season-long loan from the Dutch giants, Ajax. The 29-year-old forward, who began his professional journey at Arsenal, has built a solid reputation over the years, notably scoring an impressive 33 goals in 77 league matches during his time at Middlesbrough following a stint with Greek side PAOK Salonika.

Chuba Akpom’s stats

Akpom made the move to Ajax in the summer of 2023. However, last season, he was loaned out to French Ligue 1 club Lille, where he found the net three times across 15 appearances and gained valuable experience competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Speaking about his new move, Akpom expressed enthusiasm for joining Ipswich Town, affectionately known as the Tractor Boys. “I watch a lot of football and have always felt that Ipswich would be a great fit for my playing style, so this transfer makes perfect sense,” he shared on the club’s official website. He added, “My goal is to contribute as much as possible both on the pitch and in the dressing room. I’m committed to bringing a winning mentality to the team.”

Chuba Akpom’s arrival signifies strength for Ipswich

Akpom arrives at Ipswich following their 1-1 draw with newly promoted Birmingham City in the opening match of the season. The club now prepares for a Carabao Cup clash at home against Bromley on Tuesday, before returning to league action at Portman Road on Sunday to face Southampton, a club that, like Ipswich, was relegated from the Premier League last May. This loan signing is viewed as a key move to strengthen Ipswich’s attacking options as they aim to compete strongly in the Championship this season.
