Officers Intercepted During Security Operation
The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has confirmed the arrest of two serving police officers caught with firearms and ammunition during a security operation.
The incident happened amid the ongoing communal conflict between the Ugep and Idomi communities.
Viral Video Sparks Public Attention
A viral video circulating online claimed the officers had links to the crisis. In response, the police command released an official statement to clarify the situation.
Police spokesperson Eitokpah Akata explained that officers intercepted the suspects during a joint stop-and-search operation.
Joint Operation Led to Arrest
The operation involved personnel from the police and the Nigerian Army in Biase Local Government Area.
According to the command, the suspects rode on a motorcycle when security operatives stopped them on May 5, 2026.
Investigators later confirmed that both men serve under the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
Firearms and Ammunition Recovered
Police said officers found firearms and live ammunition in the suspects’ possession during the operation.
Authorities immediately took the officers into custody before transferring them to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Calabar.
Commissioner Orders Full Investigation
Cross River Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua has ordered a full investigation into the matter.
The command said investigators would determine the motive behind the officers’ actions and uncover all surrounding circumstances.

The police assured residents that anyone found guilty would face legal consequences regardless of rank or affiliation.
Officials also stressed their commitment to maintaining security and restoring public confidence during the communal crisis.
