Danielle Adewusi: The Doctor Behind Miss Universe Nigeria 2026

A crown can change a woman’s life overnight. For Danielle Adewusi, it may simply be giving a louder voice to work she started years ago.

The Lagos representative emerged as Miss Universe Nigeria 2026 after beating 19 other contestants at the grand finale in Lagos. Judges praised her confidence, intelligence, elegance and commitment to social impact.

Yet, long before the crown found her, Adewusi was already building a life around purpose.

She is a doctor, women’s health advocate, researcher, model and musician. She is also the daughter of a former Miss Universe Nigeria.

The crown runs in the family

Adewusi’s mother, Tonia Okogbenin, won Miss Universe Nigeria in 1991. That family connection gave the younger Adewusi an early glimpse into pageantry.

Still, she did not rush into it.

School came first. Medicine came next. Pageantry waited patiently in the background.

“My priority was excelling in school, studying Medicine and becoming a doctor,” Adewusi told The PUNCH before the competition.

Eventually, she discovered that the two worlds could work together.

From medical school to women’s health advocacy

Adewusi studied Medicine at King’s College London. She earned an MBBS and a first-class BSc in Psychology.

Her medical training also sharpened her interest in women’s healthcare. During an Obstetrics and Gynaecology rotation, she saw some of the barriers women face when seeking care.

That experience pushed her beyond the hospital.

In 2023, she founded Scrub The Stigma, an organisation that promotes women’s health education and advocacy in Nigeria and the UK. The organisation also supports women who struggle to afford essential medical care.

Its work includes outreach programmes such as Educate Lagos and Educate Edo. These initiatives help young people understand menstrual health and wellbeing.

For Adewusi, advocacy is not just a pageant talking point. It is already part of her everyday work.

There is more to her than medicine

Away from hospitals and advocacy events, Adewusi has another creative side.

She is a classically trained pianist and cellist. She studied piano at the Guildhall School of Music and holds a DipABRSM qualification. Adewusi has also published research in international scientific journals.

That mix of interests makes her pageant journey a little more intriguing.

She previously competed at Miss Universe Great Britain in 2023 and finished in the Top Five. This time, she returned to the Nigerian stage with more experience and a clearer mission.

A queen with a bigger assignment

Adewusi does not see medicine and pageantry as competing identities.

“For me, medicine and pageantry aren’t separate worlds,” she said.

“They are simply different platforms that allow me to pursue the same purpose: creating meaningful change in the lives of women and girls.”

She has also served as a UN Women UK delegate to the Commission on the Status of Women.

Now, the spotlight is bigger.

As Miss Universe Nigeria 2026, Adewusi will represent Nigeria at the 75th Miss Universe Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on November 24. She will also take her women’s health advocacy to an international audience.

So, yes, Danielle Adewusi has the crown.

But the more interesting story is what she plans to do with it.
