Rufai Oseni has challenged Peter Obi to provide evidence for his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election.
Arise News journalist Rufai Oseni has challenged Peter Obi over his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election. Oseni said Obi should provide evidence to support such a serious claim. He also warned that repeated claims without proof could hurt Obi’s credibility.
Obi made the statement during a BBC Africa interview. The interviewer asked if he still believed he won the election and had evidence to prove it. In response, Obi said:
“There’s no evidence. Everything is not based on evidence. I won the election and that’s where I will end.”
Reacting on Arise News, Oseni urged the former Labour Party candidate to stop making claims he cannot support with data. He said,
“Mr Peter Obi, it is best you do not say things if you do not have the evidence. I must have to repeat it, because when you say that I won the election, you don’t have the evidence to back it up. Then people do not take what you say seriously.”
Oseni also questioned whether Obi had private result analysis to support his position.
“Didn’t you have back-end analysis of result by result before you make the claim? Where are all your own data spreadsheets on the back end that assert your claim? Where is your own back-end collation that asserts your claim?” he asked.
He added:
“So it is very spurious to say I won something, but when they say where is the evidence, no evidence. I mean you might feel the urge that you won but if you don’t have the evidence to back it up then you didn’t win.”
Obi contested the 2023 election for the Labour Party and finished third in the results declared by INEC.
For now, the debate remains centred on evidence. While Obi maintains that he won the election, Oseni insists that such a claim must come with proof.
