An Action Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Usman Austin Okai, has urged Abuja residents earning below N300,000 monthly to seek additional sources of income amid the rising cost of living.
Okai made the statement in a Facebook post while commenting on the financial pressure facing workers in the Federal Capital Territory. He said the falling value of the naira had reduced the purchasing power of many workers. According to him, salaries have become increasingly inadequate for basic needs.
Okai wrote: “If your salary is not up to at least 300k in Abuja, the difference between you and Almajiri is just the plate. Business better alternative now. Our currency is destroyed.”
Housing, Food Costs Put Pressure On Abuja Workers
Housing remains one of the biggest expenses for residents of Abuja. Rent is particularly high in areas such as Wuse, Maitama and Asokoro. Residents in Lugbe, Kubwa and Nyanya also face significant rental costs. These expenses can take up a large part of workers’ monthly income.
Food prices have also increased household expenses. Common items such as rice, eggs, bread, tomatoes, cooking oil and chicken have become more costly. Transportation is another major burden for workers who commute daily. Higher petrol prices have contributed to increased fares since the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023.
The combined effect of food, housing and transport costs has put further pressure on low- and middle-income earners in Abuja. Okai’s comments come amid continued concerns over the cost of living and the declining purchasing power of Nigerians.
