Ecuador reach knockout stage after comeback win over Germany

Ecuador fought back from an early goal down to beat Germany 2-1 and book a place in the World Cup Round of 32.

Ecuador secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Germany on Wednesday to qualify for the World Cup knockout stage. After failing to score in their opening two group matches, the South Americans produced a spirited comeback to finish second in Group E.

Germany took the lead just two minutes into the match when Leroy Sané finished calmly after a clever pass from Florian Wirtz. Ecuador protested for a foul in the build-up, claiming Pedro Vite had been caught by Aleksandar Pavlovic’s high boot, but play continued.

The setback only strengthened Ecuador’s resolve. Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo equalised seven minutes later with a low finish past Manuel Neuer before Gonzalo Plata completed the comeback in the 77th minute, reacting quickest to a corner to score the winner.

The victory sends Ecuador into the World Cup Round of 32, where they could face England depending on the outcome of other groups. Germany had already secured top spot in Group E before kick-off.

The result also deals a blow to Scotland’s hopes of progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
