A passenger bus overturned on a desert highway in Egypt’s eastern Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday, killing 22 people and injuring 28 others, Egyptian health authorities confirmed.
The crash occurred on the road connecting the Red Sea resort towns of Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai. This happens to be a popular tourist corridor known for its beaches, coral reefs, and mountain landscapes. The bus was carrying 43 people at the time of the accident.
Jordanians Killed
Ten of the 22 killed were Jordanian nationals, according to Jordan’s state-run Al-Mamlaka television. Further reporting that 22 Jordanians were among the passengers on board.
Egypt’s health ministry revised an earlier toll of 16 upward to 22 as information continued to come in from the scene. Twenty ambulances were dispatched to the area, and those injured were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The cause of the accident had not been disclosed by authorities at the time of publication.
Road accidents are a leading cause of death in Egypt, with the country’s highways recording some of the highest fatality rates in the region. The Sinai road network, while regularly used by tourists travelling between resorts, is known for stretches of open desert highway. A route where high speeds and poor road conditions contribute to serious crashes.
