Suspect arrested after child’s death
The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of a woman identified as Ogechi John over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John.
Authorities arrested the suspect on Monday following the child’s death at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene, in Enugu East Local Government Area.
The government disclosed the development in a statement shared through Governor Peter Mbah’s WhatsApp media platform.
Neighbours report alleged abuse
According to the statement, neighbours said the incident occurred around 3 pm on Sunday.
Residents also alleged that the child suffered repeated maltreatment before her death.
They claimed the suspect frequently subjected Amanda to harsh treatment within the neighbourhood.
Police begin investigation
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force arrested the suspect shortly after the incident.
Officials said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are ongoing.
However, authorities have not disclosed the police division handling the case or the detention location of the suspect.
Government condemns child abuse
Reacting to the incident, Ngozi Enih condemned the alleged act.
She stated that the Enugu State Government maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and violence against minors.
“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse,” she said.
State vows speedy justice
Enih said the government acted immediately after learning about the tragedy.
She added that authorities would closely monitor the legal process to ensure justice is served quickly.
“We will push for a thorough and speedy investigation,” she stated.
According to her, no individual has the right to take another person’s life, especially that of a child.
Commitment to child protection
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children across Enugu State.
Officials warned that anyone found guilty of child abuse or violence against minors would face prosecution.
Authorities stressed that protecting vulnerable children remains a top priority for the administration.
Suspect remains in custody
Meanwhile, the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Security agencies are expected to conclude preliminary findings before formal prosecution begins.
Residents have also called for justice over the tragic death of the young girl.
