FG Disburses N11.8bn Interest-Free Loans to 6,842 Tertiary Institution Workers

Education support fund boosts staff welfare across 141 institutions nationwide:
The Federal Government has disbursed N11.8 billion to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff in tertiary institutions under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF). The beneficiaries were drawn from 141 institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The TISSF, launched in August 2025, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and TETFund. It provides interest-free loans of up to N10 million per staff member. The programme aims to improve staff welfare, support career growth, and strengthen financial stability.

Data from the Ministry of Education shows strong interest in the scheme. So far, 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified. Staff from federal universities make up 59 per cent of applicants. Polytechnic staff account for 23 per cent, while colleges of education represent 18 per cent. To qualify, applicants must have at least five years left before retirement.

The government is also rolling out other programmes under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative. It has distributed 240 e-tricycles across 12 institutions to improve campus mobility and support sustainability efforts.

In addition, the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, launched in January 2026, continues to gain traction. It has recorded 37,000 users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in training modules. The platform offers video lessons, case studies, and certification for professional development.

The School Safety Portal, developed with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, now contains data on over 156,000 schools. It is designed to improve security planning and monitoring across the education sector.

The Federal Government says these efforts show its commitment to improving Nigeria’s education system. Officials added that more programmes will be introduced to support both staff and students, while the TISSF remains a key tool for improving working conditions and boosting productivity in tertiary institutions.
