The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects over the kidnapping of 20 prospective NYSC members. Operatives brought the suspects before the Justice Oputa State High Court in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Specifically, law enforcement officers apprehended the suspects during targeted security operations in Rivers and Abia states.
The victims suffered abduction near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway.
Consequently, security forces launched extensive rescue operations to track down the fleeing kidnapping syndicate.
Successful Forest Rescue and Suspect Arrests
The abduction occurred while the prospective corps members traveled from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom. However, joint security forces successfully rescued all 20 corps members and one civilian from the Amakohia-Ubi forest.
Following the rescue, medical teams treated the victims at the DSS hospital facility in Owerri. Intelligence-led operations in Port Harcourt and Aba led to the arrest of five key suspects.
Meanwhile, three other injured suspects escaped, prompting an active manhunt across neighboring states.
Joint Security Taskforce Intensifies Highway Operations
The crackdown involved a coordinated joint taskforce comprising DSS operatives, military troops, and police officers.
Legal officers confirmed that the arraignment marks significant progress in dismantling violent criminal networks in the South-East.
In addition, law enforcement agencies reassured the public of their commitment to securing major transit corridors. Therefore, security operatives continue tracking fleeing gang members to prevent further highway attacks.
Finally, judicial proceedings will continue at the State High Court as prosecutors present evidence against the suspects.
