Ford has issued one of its largest recalls in years, recalling nearly 1.5 million vehicles in the U.S. after reports that rear-view cameras on certain models produce blank, distorted, or inverted images while reversing. This defect can seriously compromise driver visibility and increase crash risk, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Affected Models and Scope
The recall affects select vehicles from model years 2015 through 2019, including:
- Lincoln Navigator and MKC
 - Ford Mustang, Ranger, Edge, and Expedition
 - Super Duty trucks F250 through F550
 - Transit, Transit Connect, and Econoline vans

Ford dealers will inspect and replace the affected rear-view cameras at no cost to vehicle owners.
Safety Concerns and Reported Incidents
According to the recall report, Ford is aware of 18 accidents related to the camera malfunction. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.
What Owners Should Do
Owners of the affected models can expect to receive mailed notifications with detailed instructions on how to get their vehicle inspected. The replacement service will be available at Ford or Lincoln dealerships free of charge.
Why This Recall Matters
This recall highlights how small technical flaws can carry serious safety risks. Backup cameras are now standard safety features, and when they fail, they undermine one of the most critical tools drivers rely on while reversing.
The issue also follows a string of previous recalls, including a major settlement in which Ford agreed to pay significant penalties for delays in addressing earlier safety concerns.
Broader Implications
Automakers face increasing scrutiny over both hardware and software reliability. Dashboard cameras and electronic systems now form the backbone of modern vehicle safety, which requires strict quality control. Recurring defects can damage consumer trust and eat into a company’s bottom line, especially in a year when Ford has already issued multiple large-scale recalls across different models.
