The FUNAAB Agritech Innovation Summit showcased cutting-edge agricultural technology, innovation, and partnerships, strengthening Nigeria’s global tech profile
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is gaining recognition as a leading force in Africa’s agritech ecosystem. The university recently hosted the maiden G-SPARK Summit, a student-led technology event focused on agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The summit which took place on April 25, 2026, attracted innovators, researchers, policymakers, and global technology leaders. More than 1,000 participants attended the event, highlighting FUNAAB’s growing influence in agritech innovation across Africa.
According to the Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide, the summit reflected the university’s commitment to innovation. He said it also demonstrated the impact of youth-led solutions in addressing Africa’s development challenges.
Focus on Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence
The event took place at FUNAAB’s Ceremonial Building under the theme, “Showcasing Talents, Scaling Impact.” It was organised by the Google Developer Groups (GDG) on the university campus.
Participants explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning can improve food security and increase agricultural productivity. They also took part in practical workshops, networking sessions, innovation exhibitions, and hackathon-style competitions.
The summit also strengthened collaboration between FUNAAB, the Ogun technology community, and global technology companies such as Google and NVIDIA.
Student Support Encouraged Nationwide Participation
To encourage wider participation, the organisers provided a 40 percent transport subsidy for students travelling from outside Ogun State. This support enabled students from several universities across Nigeria to attend the event.
The venue featured high-speed internet and professional production facilities. These resources supported live demonstrations and digital collaboration throughout the programme.Olajide said the summit was designed to equip young innovators with practical skills for the global technology industry.
Organisers Address Challenges
Despite the event’s success, organisers acknowledged a few challenges. The large number of participants made crowd management difficult. There were also not enough devices available during some practical sessions.
However, the organising team said planning has already begun for G-SPARK Summit 2.0. Future editions will include partnerships with global hardware manufacturers to provide device-lending support for participants.
Strengthening Africa’s Innovation Ecosystem
Olajide said the summit confirmed the growing role of African universities in shaping the continent’s technology future. He added that combining agriculture with digital innovation will continue to strengthen FUNAAB’s position in Africa’s knowledge and startup economy.
Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Lead Organiser Mr. Yusuff Ahmad thanked the university management for supporting the initiative. He described the summit as “a bold vision to showcase the innovative capacity of African students to the world.”
