Gunmen Kill Rivers Vigilante Commander, Three Women in Omoku Attack

Four people, including a local vigilante commander, have been killed in a gun attack along Oba Road in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The victims were identified as Ozomela Stephen Nwaocha, the Omoku Zonal Commander of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), and three women.

The attack occurred on Monday evening while Nwaocha was relaxing near his residence with his sister and her friend.

The shooting triggered panic across the community. Residents fled the area, while shop owners hurriedly shut their businesses over fears of further violence.

Although no group has claimed responsibility, residents said the incident has renewed concerns about a return to the wave of violent attacks that affected the area before OSPAC was established. They also noted that several members of the local security outfit have been killed in recent times.

Confirming the incident, OSPAC Public Relations Officer Comrade Nkem Godknows said the gunmen opened fire on the victims at about 5:00 p.m.

He disclosed that three women died at the scene, while two other victims sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

Godknows urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that OSPAC and other security agencies would investigate the attack. He also appealed to the government and Nigerians to support the outfit, saying its members remain poorly funded and unpaid.

The Rivers State Police Command also confirmed the attack. Police spokesperson ASP Grace Iringe-Koko assured residents that those behind the killings would be brought to justice. Furthermore, she appealed to the public to provide useful information to assist the investigation.
