FG targets northern clean energy boom with Katsina CNG hub

The Federal Government is ramping up its clean energy drive in northern Nigeria, with Katsina State set to become a major hub under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EVs).

The move follows high-level engagements between federal officials and the Katsina State Government aimed at accelerating deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure. Under the plan, the government will establish CNG refuelling stations, EV charging points, and vehicle conversion centres across the state.

Authorities say the project will also create a “clean energy corridor”. Along key northern transport routes, improving mobility while reducing reliance on petrol. This aligns with ongoing efforts to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal by promoting cheaper and clean energy alternatives.

Katsina has already taken early steps, including the commissioning of its first CNG station—seen as a foundation for broader expansion.

Jobs, Skills, and Cheaper Transport in Focus

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative places strong emphasis on human capital development. Youths in the region will be trained as certified technicians in vehicle conversion, maintenance. And clean energy systems—creating new job opportunities in a growing sector.

Experts say CNG-powered vehicles can cut fuel costs significantly, offering relief to commuters and transport operators. The broader rollout across northern states is expected to boost economic activity, improve energy access, and reduce carbon emissions.

However, challenges remain. Limited infrastructure, technical capacity gaps, and funding constraints could slow adoption if not addressed quickly.

Despite these hurdles, the government remains optimistic that the initiative will transform transportation in northern Nigeria. Making it more affordable, sustainable, and locally driven.

If successfully implemented, the Katsina hub could serve as a model for clean energy expansion nationwide, positioning Nigeria for a gradual transition toward greener transport systems while supporting economic growth.
