‘Instead of vilifying INEC, seek accelerated hearing’ — Keyamo advises ADC

Festus Keyamo

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, has advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to seek an accelerated court hearing over its leadership dispute rather than criticise the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Keyamo gave the advice in a post on X on Friday.

He said the crisis within the party is a legal issue that cannot be resolved through public outcry or political pressure.

“Law does not admit of sentiment. Decisions are based on facts, evidence, and interpretation of laws,” he said.

Keyamo noted that arguments around status quo ante bellum are misplaced, stressing that the core issue is the pending court case challenging the party’s leadership.

He warned that the dispute could have serious implications for the party’s participation in the 2027 general election.

“As long as the case remains in court, all actions of either faction may end up being nugatory after the deadline for nominations,” he said.

The minister said the situation could result in the ADC having no candidates if the matter is not resolved quickly.

He argued that INEC’s decision to de-recognise both factions was necessary and timely.

“INEC has forewarned the party of the danger ahead and opened a window for them to act,” he said.

Keyamo urged the party to either resolve its leadership crisis internally, seek a faster court ruling, or consider alternative political arrangements.

He dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or INEC is responsible for the party’s challenges.

“To keep blaming imaginary opponents is mischievous,” he said.

Keyamo also reacted to the party’s plan to proceed with congresses and convention despite INEC’s stance.

“They say they will proceed. That is fine by us,” he said.

He added that the party should take responsibility for its actions, noting that its current predicament stems from internal decisions.
