The Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State has asked the state police command for support in tackling emerging cult-related activities and other anti-social behaviour among students.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, and other officials to the newly posted Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, in Dutse. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, the university wants to strengthen its partnership with the police in security, intelligence sharing and crime prevention.
University raises concern over cultism
Gumel expressed concern over the reported emergence of cult-related practices among some students. He said the issue required early and joint action before it became established on campus. The Vice-Chancellor also called for stronger security around the university and its environs.
“A safe and peaceful academic environment is essential for teaching, learning and research,” he said.
He stressed the need to promote discipline, good conduct and responsible citizenship among students.
Police promise stronger security
Responding, Murtala assured the university of the command’s support. He said the police would work with the institution to protect students and staff.
“The Command places high premium on the security of educational institutions and will continue to work closely with the university to safeguard students and staff,” Murtala said.
The commissioner said the command would use a preventive and intelligence-led approach to tackle the reported cult activities. He also urged the university to improve its internal system for identifying and reporting suspicious activities.
“Security is a shared responsibility, requiring effective collaboration among the police, university authorities, students, parents and community leaders,” he said.
Murtala promised continued patrols, police visibility and intelligence gathering around the university. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the institution safe and conducive for academic activities.
