Germany have confirmed the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as the country’s new head coach, ending months of speculation about the former Liverpool manager’s future.
Klopp has signed a contract that will keep him in charge until the end of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. He replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s disappointing World Cup campaign ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32.
The 59-year-old returns to management after leaving Liverpool in 2024. Klopp had said he was “running out of energy” after spending nine successful years at Anfield, where he won six major trophies, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
Following a short break from football, Klopp accepted the role of Red Bull’s global head of football. At the time, he insisted he had no plans to return to club management.
His first match as Germany coach will be against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 24.
Klopp will reunite with trusted assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz. Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender has also joined the coaching staff.
Meanwhile, former Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker will become Germany’s sporting director in January, replacing Andreas Rettig.
The German Football Association hopes Klopp’s appointment will restore the national team’s competitiveness ahead of major international tournaments.
