The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered a fresh political setback in Kano State after some of its members in Kumbotso Local Government Area defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors formally announced their decision during a political gathering, where they cited the need for a new direction and pledged support for the NDC as preparations for the next electoral cycle gather momentum.
Defectors pledge support for NDC
Receiving the new members, NDC leaders welcomed the defectors and expressed confidence that the party would continue to expand its presence across Kano State.
They described the development as another indication of the party’s growing acceptance among grassroots politicians and supporters.
One of the party leaders urged the new members to remain committed to the ideals of the NDC and work together to strengthen its structures ahead of future elections.
APC members explain decision
Speaking during the event, representatives of the defectors said they decided to leave the APC after becoming dissatisfied with developments within the party.
They maintained that the NDC offered what they described as a more inclusive political platform capable of addressing the aspirations of members and residents.
According to them, the decision followed consultations among party supporters in the local government area before the final announcement.
Political realignments gather pace
The latest defections add to a series of political realignments being witnessed across several states as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kano remains one of Nigeria’s key political battlegrounds, making every major defection significant as parties intensify efforts to strengthen their grassroots support before the next election cycle.
