One of the 25 girls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State on Sunday has escaped and returned home safely. Meanwhile, school Principal Musa Rabi Magaji confirmed the escape.
He said the girl broke free minutes after the attack. Additionally, another student, who was not among the 25 confirmed abducted, also managed to flee during the raid.
“One is part of the 25 abducted, and the other one returned earlier. They are safe and sound,” Magaji said.
The abduction followed a violent assault. Gunmen killed the school’s vice principal and left several unidentified bodies within the school premises. According to sources, the attackers entered in large numbers at night. They fired sporadically before gaining access to the school.
Federal Government Condemns Attack
The Federal Government condemned the attack. Furthermore, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris called it a “reprehensible assault on innocent students” and condemned the killing of school officials. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed that protecting Nigerians, especially schoolchildren, remains a key responsibility of the state.
“Security and intelligence agencies have been ordered to immediately locate and rescue the abducted students. Therefore, the attackers must face the full weight of the law,” Idris said.
Strengthening Security and Regional Cooperation
The Minister added that the Federal Government is upgrading military, police, and intelligence capabilities. Moreover, regional collaboration with ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Multinational Joint Task Force is being expanded. These efforts aim to dismantle terrorist networks across West and Central Africa.
As a result, authorities are mobilizing all available resources to ensure the safe return of the remaining students. Local communities are assisting by providing intelligence and supporting security forces.
“Protecting our children is a national priority. Additionally, we are committed to ensuring their safety and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” Idris added.
Hope Amid Tragedy
The escape of the first girl gives hope as rescue operations continue. Meanwhile, security agencies are intensifying efforts. Communities are working to secure other schools and prevent future attacks. Finally, authorities urge vigilance and cooperation to protect students across the region.
