FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe has hit back at Minister Nyesom Wike after their latest political clash. Kingibe said insults, threats and political pressure would not stop her from questioning government actions.
She made the statement on Thursday, September 24, through her verified X handle. The senator said her role requires her to demand accountability and protect constitutional principles.
“I have never been one to be intimidated by insults, threats or political pressure, and I will not start now,” Kingibe said.
She explained that asking questions about public borrowing and government spending forms part of her legislative duty.
“If I raise questions about public borrowing, public funds or the conduct of government, it is not an act of disrespect; it is part of my duty as a legislator,” she added.
Kingibe then challenged Wike to show proof of National Assembly approval for loans allegedly taken to fund FCT projects.
“I dare the FCT Minister to show the people of the FCT, and all who have asked, the Votes and Proceedings of the day the approval was given,” she said.
Kingibe added that the loan request never came before the Senate.
“I cannot speak for the House of Representatives, but I know that it was never brought before the Senate.”
She also said President Bola Tinubu has always sought Senate approval for loans. The senator further rejected Wike’s reported claim that she would not return to the Senate in 2027.
“No minister, no matter how powerful, is above the law. No public office holder is above scrutiny,” she said.
Kingibe also condemned attempts to silence women in government.
“Women who choose to serve in public office must not be expected to remain silent simply because they ask difficult questions or refuse to compromise their principles,” she said.
She ended with a clear message:
“I did not enter public service to be intimidated. I entered it to serve. The will of the people of the FCT will prevail on the day of the election.”
The latest exchange adds another chapter to the growing tension between Kingibe and Wike. For now, Kingibe says she will continue to question government decisions and demand accountability. She also insists that the people of the FCT, not any individual, will decide their political representatives in 2027.
