Lagos State has officially launched the Lagos Private Health Insurance Program, a major reform aimed at expanding coverage and strengthening healthcare financing. The initiative targets millions of residents. It seeks to improve access to quality healthcare through public-private collaboration.
The launch took place at Victoria Island’s Civic Centre. It brought together government officials, private insurers, healthcare regulators, and development partners. Furthermore, stakeholders praised the state for promoting transparency, efficiency, and equitable healthcare delivery.
Digital Infrastructure Supports Efficient Healthcare Financing
The program introduces a fully digital marketplace. It manages enrolment, provider selection, fund disbursement, claims processing, and monitoring. Lagos Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, said the system will increase transparency. It will also shift competition from pricing to value delivery.
“Improved financing, digital governance, and coordinated insurance processes will give residents better access to affordable healthcare services,” Abayomi said.
Moreover, a population-based enrolment model ensures fair risk distribution. Private insurers will contribute to a state-managed risk equalisation fund. This fund will support vulnerable groups, boost emergency response, and advance universal health coverage.
Multi-Sector Collaboration Strengthens Health Outcomes
Stakeholders, including the Lagos State Health Management Agency and private financial institutions, emphasized the need for collaboration. In addition, Managing Director of Sterling Bank, Abubakar Suleiman, highlighted the bank’s role in digital and financial support. This support enhances efficiency and sustainability of the program.
National Adviser on Health Insurance Matters, Jimi Arigbabuwo, said fair compensation for private providers will reduce medical tourism. Consequently, residents will gain more confidence in local healthcare services.
Long-Term Impact and Next Steps
The government plans to pilot the program and review initial outcomes. Afterward, it will expand implementation statewide. Officials urged residents, employers, civil society groups, and insurers to participate fully. The program’s success depends on shared responsibility.
