Lagos Seals Buildings, Malls Over Elevator Safety Violations

Safety Commission cracks down on property owners for failing to register lifts

The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed several buildings, shopping malls, and hotels across Lagos for violating mandatory lift and elevator safety regulations.

The enforcement affected more than 12 facilities in key areas, including Lekki Phase 1 and Ikeja.

Authorities Enforce Compliance After Repeated Warnings

Officials said the affected property owners failed to register their elevator systems for inspection, maintenance, and safety monitoring.

The Commission had issued multiple notices before taking action. However, many operators ignored the directives.

Leading the enforcement team, Chief Scientific Officer Sovi Tijani, who represented Director-General Lanre Mojola, said the clampdown became necessary due to repeated non-compliance.

“We served notices and gave deadlines, but they failed to act,” Tijani said.

He added that some property managers refused to accept official letters. Others tried to obstruct enforcement officers.

Safety Risks Drive Government Action

The Commission stressed that proper registration ensures regular inspection and reduces risks to building users.

Officials warned that poorly maintained elevators pose serious safety threats in both public and private facilities.

Tijani said the agency will continue enforcement to protect lives and property.

List of Affected Properties

Among the sealed facilities are The Heritage/AXA on Awolowo Road, Mosesola House, Debour House, and Bosch House.

Others include Bridge View, Elizabeth Court, 10Bou Towers, Brion Court, Footprints Apartments, and Lekki Luxury Flats.

Brasas Mall on Admiralty Way also faced enforcement action.

Government Urges Immediate Compliance

The Commission has urged building owners and facility managers to comply with safety regulations.

It advised operators to register their lift systems and carry out regular maintenance in line with government standards.

Authorities warned that defaulters will face continued sanctions until full compliance is achieved.
