Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has lost his wife and two children after rescue workers recovered their bodies from a collapsed apartment building following the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela’s northern coast.
Trejo, 38, was in Caracas with his club, Sport Marítimo de La Guaira, when twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 hit the country on Wednesday. He rushed to Playa Grande after learning that the building where his family lived had collapsed.
The 74-hour search ended when rescue teams found the bodies of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa, beneath the rubble.
During the search, Trejo appealed for prayers on social media, saying he hoped his family had not been inside the building when it collapsed. His father and brother also travelled from Argentina to assist emergency crews.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support from across the football community. Fellow Argentine player Edson Tortolero described the loss as heartbreaking, while Sport Marítimo de La Guaira extended its condolences to Trejo and his family.
The deaths come as Venezuela continues recovery efforts following the earthquakes, which caused widespread destruction across the country’s northern coast. Rescue teams remain on the ground as authorities assess the full scale of the disaster.
Recovery efforts continue as Venezuela mourns the victims of one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
