Brazilian police have arrested a man who impersonated football manager Luís Castro on messaging apps, posing as the current Grêmio and former Al-Nassr head coach to solicit money from professional players under the guise of buying food baskets for charity.
The scammer created a fake account using Castro’s identity and contacted players directly through messaging platforms. Further asking them to transfer funds for what he described as a charitable food donation drive. Several players sent money before the fraud was uncovered and reported to police.
The suspect has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. It remains unclear how many players were targeted in total or the full amount of money transferred before the scam was exposed.
Luís Castro has not yet made a public statement on the matter.
