Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has warned traditional rulers in the state against engaging in partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde said monarchs who choose to participate openly in political activities should be prepared to be treated as politicians.
The governor gave the warning on Saturday at the newly commissioned palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola.
The event marked the monarch’s first coronation anniversary. It also featured the conferment of the honorary chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland.
Makinde urges monarchs to remain neutral
Makinde urged traditional rulers to remain neutral in political matters. He said their primary responsibility should remain the peace, unity and development of their communities.
The governor stressed that monarchs should avoid taking sides in partisan political activities.
He said their involvement in politics could affect the respect and traditional authority attached to their positions.
“If you want to play politics, then you should be ready to be treated as a politician. But if you want to remain a traditional ruler, then stay away from politics,” Makinde warned.

The governor’s warning comes as political activities increase across the country ahead of the 2027 elections. Political parties and their supporters have already begun preparations for the polls.
Makinde urged traditional rulers to focus on their roles as custodians of culture and peace. He said monarchs have an important role to play in maintaining stability within their communities.
According to him, traditional institutions should not become partisan platforms during election periods.
