Mamdani calls on King Charles to return Koh-i-Noor diamond

New York’s mayor has revived calls for Britain to return one of its most disputed colonial-era treasures.

Zohran Mamdani said he would urge King Charles III to return the historic Koh-i-Noor to India, shortly before meeting the monarch during his U.S. visit.

Speaking ahead of a public ceremony in New York, Mamdani said he would raise the issue privately if given the chance. The two later met at the event, but officials have not confirmed whether the topic was discussed.

The Koh-i-Noor diamond, currently part of the British Crown Jewels, weighs 105 carats and is set in the crown of Queen Elizabeth. India has repeatedly demanded its return, arguing the gem was taken under coercive terms during British colonial rule.

The diamond has a long and complex history, passing through several empires before being handed over to the British. Many in India see it as a symbol of colonial exploitation and cultural loss.

British officials have historically resisted calls for its return. Former Prime Minister David Cameron once said repatriating such artifacts would set a difficult precedent for museums.

King Charles’ current visit to the United States has focused on diplomacy and cultural ties. Mamdani’s remarks highlight how unresolved colonial-era issues continue to shape international relations.

The renewed call adds momentum to a broader global push for the restitution of cultural artifacts taken during imperial rule.
