Manchester City delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, strengthening their position at the top of the Premier League despite continuing uncertainty over their financial case.
The victory came in City’s first match since they were reportedly found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations. The club has appealed the verdict, leaving questions over potential sanctions hanging over the season.
Liverpool supporters made their feelings clear before and during the match, directing chants of “cheat” at the visitors. Banners displayed on the Kop included messages accusing City of cheating a generation of supporters. City fans responded with a show of support for the club’s leadership, displaying a flag bearing the message “In Khaldoon We Trust”.
Despite the hostile atmosphere, City remained composed and gradually took control of the contest. Liverpool struggled to create clear opportunities during a cagey first half, while the visitors controlled the tempo. The game opened up after the break, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma making successive saves to deny Victor Munoz and Ryan Gravenberch. Liverpool’s task became even harder after Gravenberch received a second yellow card for a foul on Doku, leaving the hosts with 10 men.
Erling Haaland subsequently missed an opportunity when he rolled his effort wide after getting through on goal. However, the Norwegian striker made amends in the 65th minute, finishing powerfully to give City the lead. Three minutes later, substitute Jeremy Doku doubled the advantage with a spectacular strike into the top corner.
City capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Rayan Cherki producing an impressive individual effort to complete the scoring 12 minutes from time. The result restored City’s three-point advantage at the top of the table and underlined their attacking strength.
