The Chairman and CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), has issued a stern warning to drug barons, traffickers, and cartels. He urged them to leave the criminal trade or face tougher enforcement during his second five-year tenure.
Marwa, reappointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 14, 2025, addressed jubilant NDLEA staff at the Agency’s National Headquarters in Abuja. He promised a “hell and bleak” tenure for those involved in illicit drug activities.
Presidential Recognition and Support
Marwa expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for recognizing the Agency’s ongoing fight against drug abuse. He said:
“We thank the President and Commander-in-Chief for the mandate to continue our war against drug trafficking. I also thank all our personnel for their 24/7 dedication despite the risks involved.”
He also acknowledged the support of Attorney General Prince Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, and local and international partners in the fight against narcotics.
A Direct Message to Drug Cartels
Marwa had a clear warning for cartels:
“The cartels have not seen anything yet. Drugs shall not pass, in or out or within Nigeria. This second tenure will be tough for them.”
He reiterated that NDLEA will remain steadfast in enforcement. Those engaged in drug trafficking were urged to switch to legitimate businesses through the Agency’s Alternative Development Unit.
“Cannabis growers and other offenders can collaborate with us to engage in lawful crops. But those who refuse will face arrest, confiscation of assets, and seizure of drugs. Nothing will be left when they come out of jail.”
Strengthening Prevention and Rehabilitation Efforts
Marwa also stressed NDLEA’s commitment to drug demand reduction. He said the Agency will enhance prevention, sensitization, counseling, and rehabilitation of affected youths.
“Currently, we have 30 rehabilitation centers. With support from the Renewed Hope Agenda, seven more centers are coming in 2025. Every state will have at least one rehab facility.”
Additionally, NDLEA will collaborate with the Ministries of Health and Education to implement drug testing for students in tertiary institutions. This initiative aims to identify and prevent early addiction.
Conclusion
Brigadier General Marwa reaffirmed NDLEA’s dedication to President Tinubu’s mandate. He emphasized that drug trafficking will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria. Both enforcement and rehabilitation will continue simultaneously.
